February 2, 1937 - August 5, 2021
Obituary I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, and I have kept the faith. 1 Timothy 4:7 Dorothy Lee Hawkins Barber (Bluchie), 84, of Fayetteville, NC, was called from labor to reward on Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was born February 2, 1937, in Wilmington, NC to Erma Boone Gerald. Norman and Annie Hawkins of Kellumtown, NC, raised Dorothy along with three children of their own (namely the late Dorothy Rae, Dolphus and Maceo). Dorothy was married to the late Johnny Barber, Belgrade, NC. She gave birth to 11 children and helped raise many more. At an early age, Dorothy received Christ at First Baptist Church, Kellumtown, NC where she served on the junior usher board, the junior and senior choirs. She eventually relocated from Kellumtown, NC to Kinston, NC in the early 60’s to allow her children to experience better opportunities in the big city of Kinston, NC, which we realized it was only “BIG” in relation to Kellumtown, NC. In Kinston, NC, she worked as a seamstress at Albain Shirt Factory and Kinston Shirt Factory. Dorothy moved to Fayetteville, NC in the early 80’s to bring the family closer to her daughters who had relocated there. She quickly became an active member at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. She sang in the senior choir and took care of the church’s laundry. She worked as a seamstress at Kings Point, and as a presser at Parker’s Cleaners in Fayetteville, NC. Dorothy was a loving woman who touched many lives. She was the community mom; the neighborhood “go-to” for children and adults alike. She never turned anyone away whether they needed an ear to listen, a shoulder to lean on, a prayer, words of encouragement, a bite to eat, a place to sleep or whatever the need. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. She is survived by seven (7) children: Johnnie Hawkins (Rose), Spring Lake, NC, Kent Barber, Fayetteville, NC, Evelyn Barber, Greensboro, NC, Laura (Larry) Williams, Foristell, MO, Jerome Barber (Phyllis), Fayetteville, NC, Alison Williams, Hope Mills, NC and Sterling Brown, Trenton, NJ. She is also survived by 26 grandchildren: Roosevelt Whitehead, Jr., Antuan Hawkins, Keisha Jones, Janita Jones, Tammy (George) Newman, Shamika (Calvin) Mack, Christopher Williams, Jr., Carlos (LaTonya) Bruton, Clifton Colvin, Jr. Colian Spight, DeShaun Spight, Keosha (Adam) Graham, Christopher Brown (Ashley), Jerome Dorsey, Ezekiel Barber, Menzola Barber, Isaiah Barber, Jerrell Williams, Edwin Robinson, Derek Becton, LaQuanda Barber, Antuan Barber, Marquita Hawkins, Vershanti Walker, Videl Dorsey, Ethel Dorsey. She is also survived by four sisters: Barbara Winn, Linda Henderson, Rosalind Stanley and Gloria Gerald, all of Jacksonville, NC. She is preceded in death by five children, Sandra Hawkins, Yvonne Downing, Stephanie Bruton Bell, Norman Barber and Yul Barber; four siblings, Annie Whitehead, William Boone, Samuel Gerald and Charles Gerald. She leaves 34 great-grandchildren, one greatgreat grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives
