Mr. Charlie "Charles" Monroe Jr.

Charlie Monroe, Jr., affectionately known as Charles, was born on June 3, 1943, in Swans Creek, North Carolina, to Charlie Monroe, Sr. and Alberta (Taylor) Monroe. He was the eldest son among eleven children (Lois, Annie Jane, Dorothy Ann, Ruby, Lessie, Allie’B, Patricia, Patrick, Dennis, and Howard. Charles embraced the role of protector and steadfast supporter for his family from a young age. Charles began his education at Lewis Chapel Elementary School and later graduated from Anne Chestnut High School, where he also showcased his reliability and sense of responsibility by driving the school bus. Known for his safe, faithful, and dependable service, he was never tardy, earning the trust and admiration of both students and faculty. Upon graduating high school, Charles ventured to Newark, New Jersey, where he married his former wife, Lucille Boatright, mother of Randy, Jaelyn, Sheila, and David. Lucille and Charles remained friends after their divorce. Years later, he met and fell in love with Ms. Geraldine Watson. In Newark he worked as a baker at both Mrs. Macs and Silver Crest Bakeries. His passion for nurturing and guiding others led him to a fulfilling career as an Institutional Trade Instructor (ITI) and kitchen supervisor at Northern State Correctional Facility. Charles earned respect and recognition for his dedication and leadership over his 25-year tenure. After retiring in 2009, Charles returned to Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he spent his final days surrounded by family, friends, and loved ones. His life was a testament to hard work, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to those he cared for. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Monroe Sr. and Alberta Monroe; siblings: Annie Jane Palmer, Lois Gomez, Dorothy Ann Monroe, and Ruby Legion Monroe; and his children David Monroe and Sheila Monroe. He leaves behind his loving wife, Geraldine Monroe; sons Randall Monroe, Andre Singleton (Gayle), Daniel Watson; and daughter Jaelyn Hicks (Tru). Charles also leaves behind two grandsons and five granddaughters, a host of nieces, nephews, cherished relatives and friends. Charlie Jr. will be remembered for his enduring love and dedication to his family, his unwavering work ethic, and his compassionate spirit. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
