Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” Psalm 23 Mitchell Lee Cogdell, Sr. "Mitch Rider" transitioned from his earthly home to his eternal home, Tuesday, April 16, 2024. He was the oldest of nine children born to the late James Luther and Alice Dancy Cogdell on September 24, 1941 in Fayetteville, NC. He was the oldest grandchild of the Vandyke-Rosa Cogdell Family. Three siblings, William Henry Cogdell, Mary Alice Cogdell and Rodney Cogdell preceded him in death. Mitchell was educated in the Cumberland County Schools, graduating from E.A. Armstrong High School, June 1960. He joined Falling Run Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and dutifully attended until he enlisted in the United States Air Force on February 27, 1961. He was assigned to the Air Force Special Operation Command and Ballistic Missile Unit. His occupational specialty was a Flyer Jet Mechanic. He proudly served his country until February 26, 1967. He was formerly married to Elizabeth M. Cogdell and to this union, one daughter, Phyllis Marie; three sons, the late Mitchell Lee Cogdell, Jr., Franklin D. and Steven V. Cogdell were born. As we gather in memory of our loved one, we are grateful for the years we shared with him. Surviving to accept God's plan with humility and to perpetuate his memory are: one daughter, Phyllis Cogdell Council (Archie), Fayetteville, NC; two sons, Franklin D. Cogdell (Deborah), Virginia Beach, VA and Steven V. Cogdell (Michelle), Ludowici, GA; three sisters, Rosa Naomi Melvin (David), Fayetteville, NC, Annie C. Cochran, Fayetteville, NC and Christine Brazel, Federal Way, WA; two brothers, James E. Cogdell (Ann) and Ray A. Cogdell (Deborah), Fayetteville, NC; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one paternal aunt, Mable C. Smith; one paternal uncle, Ambrose Cogdell, Fayetteville, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
