Mr. Sylvester Colbert

Sylvester Colbert was born to the late Gertrude and Marvin D. Colbert on October 5, 1943, in Houston County, Georgia. He was the oldest of nine children. He was affectionately known as “Wilcome” by his family and friends. He loved to be called by this nickname. After graduating from high school, he attended THE FORT VALLEY STATE COLLEGE where he majored in Liberal Arts. He was a proud Wildcat and attended Fort Valley football games until he was not able to attend, While attending Fort Valley State University, the military came calling and he was enlisted in the United States Army. He was a proud medic who helped wounded soldiers on the battlefield continue to fight. He was awarded the Sharp Shooter award on the M14 rifle. After completing his time in the Army, he found employment at the 78th Air Base Wing at Robins Air Force Base. He retired in 2001 as the Chief of Mobility for the Air Base, He retired with 36 years of service. He was given many accolades and honors to include Supervisor of the Year two years in a row. He loved being an inspiration to the many airman and officers that he mentored during his service as a Federal Civilian employee. After retirement, he moved to Fayetteville, North Carolina with his wife, Brenda Colbert. In Fayetteville, he was able to work on his gardening, perfecting his grilling skills, and cruise all over the globe with his beloved Brenda. He joined the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was a faithful Christian and he truly loved the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Marvin D. Colbert; his loving sister, Margaret Colbert; and his brother, Eric Colbert. He leaves to cherish his precious memories: wife, Brenda Colbert; one favorite daughter, Chelsea Lynn Colbert; three sisters, Jeanette Royster, Carolyn Colbert, Minnie McColumn; two brothers, Marvin D. Colbert, Jr. and Michael Colbert (Diane Colbert); five sisters-in-law, Shelby Southerland, Rosalind Sherrod, Darnell Williams, Shirley Dixon and Gwendolyn Allen; he has two grandchildren, Jessica and Omar; one great grandchild, Austin; one aunt, Ella Marion Mathis; one uncle, Warren Reid; he has a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He will be missed tremendously.
