Mr. Alvester Melvin Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Alvester Sylvester Melvin was born May 12, 1953, and his home going was June 15, 2022 at his home, Fayetteville, North Carolina. He was born to the late Alfred and Mamie Melvin. He has fifteen siblings, Katie J. Wash- ington, Sonnie, Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Lounora Melvin (David), Mattie Thaggard (Timothy), Frances Adams (James), Joseph, Ronald, and William Preston, all preceded him in death. He was blessed with two children. Tetric McNeill, and Alex Melvin who preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memories his son Tetric McNeill of Atlanta Geor- gia, two brothers: Charles, and Donald Melvin of Fayetteville, NC; two sisters: Clara Ferguson (Johnnie) and Darlene Melvin, both of Chicago, IL,; twenty-one grandchildren and five great grandchildren. One brother-inlaw, David Melvin; One sister-in-law, Joanne Melvin and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends Alvester at an early age, was baptized and joined Cedar Creek First Mis- sionary Baptist Church. He was educated in Cumberland County. He attended Armstrong High School, and graduated from Cape Fear Sr. High. He was among the class of the first African Americans to attend a deseg- regated high school. He often spoke of the challenges they faced during those years. He loved cooking at our family gatherings. He and his broth- ers always made sure there were plenty of fish, barbecue and other foods. He worked hard every day and he celebrated and gave God thanks for his accomplishments. He loved people, and the community knew that his house was a place they were welcome. In his early years, he worked on the family farms located around Cedar Creek. For several years, he worked at various types of industrial compa- nies located in Fayetteville, NC. He also worked in the logging industry. His most recent work until his home going was as a repair person, con- struction and concrete worker, yard maintenance and many other odd jobs. He was someone you could count on to help with any home project. He will be greatly missed in the community. Alvester worked faithfully helping others to build, to plant, and to harvest. Often he worked with the attitude that he would help someone even when they could not afford to pay. He was happiest when entertaining, laughing and having fun with ev- eryone. He was always a joyful, and high-spirited person. He often faced challenges with a “We Can Do It” attitude. Alvester loved his family dearly. If possible, there was nothing that he would not do for them. He often worked behind the scenes during funer- als, digging graves for family members, and helping to clean the Melvin’s cemetery. He always spoke in a positive manner, believing that God would make a way. He had a heart of gold for his friends, family, and community. He fed many at his table or the grill which is where you often found him, and he opened his doors to strangers. To those that needed re- lief he gave his best. He lent to others, even when he had lack. His favorite words, “I Ain’t Worried About It, The Lord Will Make a Way.” Alvester, you are the greatest, rest on now, we will see you again. The Lord said, “Well done my good and faithful servant”, You have been faithful over a few things, now its stored up for you in the kingdom, Come on up and I will make you ruler over the many.“
