September 29, 1928 - October 2, 2020
Mrs. Verlene Jacqueline Merrick McDougald, the daughter of the late James and Epsie Merrick was born Robeson County on September 29, 1928. Affectionately, called “Ver” by her siblings, she was the fifth child of thirteen children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings; James, Jr, Wilbert, Lee, Vivian, Rosina, Martha Louise, and Annie Neal. In 1947, at the age of 19, Verlene married the love of her life, Ernest McDougald, Sr. Their union of 62 years produced five “living generations” during her life time. They were separated by his death in 2008. Verlene accepted Christ at an early age and was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Lumberton, NC. Possessing a loving gift of service, Verlene exemplified Jesus’ command “love one another” through her ministries in the Susie Scales Floral Club, the Lott Carey Baptist Missionary Circle, The Willing Workers, and the Hospitality Committee. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, A Brownie Scout Troop Leader, and as a church usher. Her faith in God and her devotion to her church and church family was always a great source of inspiration for her. Cherishing her community and neighborhood, Verlene was an advocate for growth and unity, she was recognized by the Zeta Beta Sorority of Lumberton for her service to the community. A strong supporter of family and children, their house on Seaboard and Holly Streets was always welcoming to neighbors and relatives. She always showed kindness and encouragement to the children and until her passing, they would often visit and thank her for the kindness that she displayed throughout their lives. Verlene attended Redstone Academy and graduated in the class of 1947 among the top of her class. She fondly enjoyed her occupation of household worker and caregiver. In her later years, she spent time reading devotionals, reading her bible, and completing word search puzzles. On Friday, October 2,2020 Verlene slipped away peacefully in her sleep as God, with His most infinite wisdom, saw fit to remove Verlene from our mist and into her heavenly home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ernest; her sweet daughter, Mildred; her two much loved sons, Phillip and Carl; a great grandson, Brandon, and a loving son-in-law, Wilson Thompson. Verlene’s sweet and kind spirit will continue to live on through her children, family, and friends for generations to come. A faithful servant, her love for the Lord was evident in her daily walk, interactions with others and her giving spirit. Verlene knew that God blessed her favorably and that His word is true. She lived by her motto; “Be nice”, on a daily basis. Left to cherish her memory and to carry on her legacy are her loving children, Ernest (Carnetta) McDougald of Red Springs, NC; Lois J.
