It is with a mix of sorrow and celebration that we announce the peaceful passing of Costella Black, who gracefully eased into eternal rest on Friday, August 25th, 2023, at the remarkable age of 96. Her life, filled with love, strength, and wisdom, left an impression on the hearts of all who knew her. Costella's journey began on January 27th, 1927, as the beloved daughter of Joseph and Josephine Wright in Charleston, SC. She was one of eight cherished siblings. Costella's legacy lives on through her surviving sisters, Christine Maitland, Hester Singleton, and Theodosia Wright. While the other siblings have departed this world, their spirits undoubtedly live on in the love they shared. Along her journey, Costella found true love in the arms of Clifton Leroy Black. Their union was one of unwavering companionship and shared dreams. Together, they crafted a beautiful life that radiated with love and unforgettable memories. Clifton's passing in 1999 left an irreplaceable void in Costella's heart, yet her strength and endurance remained unshaken. Costella's legacy is further carried by her living children, Cynthia Upchurch and Paul Hawk, who were the recipients of her steadfast care and affection. Her memory is also treasured by her son-in-law, David Upchurch, whose devotion and support over the past 14 years have exemplified the importance of compassion within a family. Though her son Clifton Black Jr. preceded her in passing, his spirit lives on in the memories they shared. The impact of a life well-lived is also measured in the generations it touches. Costella's influence extends to her 13 grandchildren. Atiya, Donald, Briana, Nadia, Andre, Brian (deceased), Tieasha, Sheree, Paul, Nicole, Paul, Michael, and Daniel all carry forward the lessons she taught and the love she gave. The circle of life expands with the 14 great-grandchildren as well. Costella always displayed a spirit of joy and resilience that served as an inspiration to all who knew her. She navigated the challenges of her time with grace and determination. Her life was a true testament to the enduring power of love, family, and the profound impact one soul can have on the lives of so many. Today, let us not mourn her passing, but instead celebrate the vibrant tapestry of her life; one woven with care, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to those she held dear.
