Retired SSG Walter Muhammad

Walter Muhammad, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, was born on July 11, 1959, in Lakehurst, NJ, to the late Walee and Fredine Muhammad. His life was defined by love, honor, and dedication. Above all, Walter was a protector to all those he held dear. Born into a military family, Walter spent his early years traveling stateside and living abroad—Taipei, Taiwan and Iraklion, Crete Greece. In 1976, Walter joined the military. This is where he met his soulmate and wife, Sharon. He often recounted the moment she walked into his supply room—he knew immediately she was the one. Together, Walter and Sharon built a beautiful life, blessed with two children, Chaz and Asia. His service to his country was a cornerstone of his identity. Walter served with distinction in the U.S. Army, with assignments at Fort Lee, VA; Fort Hood, TX; Berlin, Germany; Fort Stewart, GA; and Fort Bragg, NC. He was a member of the Infantry 11B Bradley Scout Squad Command and worked as a U.S. Army Support Command Service Specialist, excelling in every role. His Masonic legacy (TAKBIR TEMPLE #227, Hourglass Lodge 113, Cosmopolitan Lodge C Hawaii, Consistory C Hawaii) and his unwavering dedication to the principles of honor and brotherhood will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him. Walter’s passion for martial arts led him to train in Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do under Master Chung Il Kim, earning a Black Belt and the rank of 2nd degree. His discipline and perseverance were evident in all aspects of his life. After his military career, Walter transitioned to serving his community as a correctional officer at Harnett Correctional and Central Prison in Raleigh, NC. A member of the Prison Emergency Response Team, he found fulfillment in mentoring and training others. Walter also enjoyed fishing, firearms, and working in his yard. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, creating cherished memories that will last forever. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walee and Fredine Muhammad. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Sharon; children, Asia (Karina) and Chaz (Dee); grandchildren, Kelis, Ky’Ron, Cha’zaria, Nalah and Landen; sisters, Gail and Cheryl; nieces, Raushaunah (Al), Alexandra (Brandon), Jennifer, Shelly, Jala, Atiya and Shaquan; and nephews, Andrew, Jason, and Julian, a host of family and friends. Walter will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who were blessed to know him. His larger than life legacy will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
