Mr. Willie Lee Powell

On July 6, 2012, while surrounded by family, God dispatched his heavenly angels to bring home his servant, Willie Lee Powell. Willie Lee Powell, son of the late Dock and Alvina Powell was born in Edgecombe County on August 6, 1946.Willie was raised in Edgecombe County and graduated from W.A. Pattillo High School in 1964. After High School, Willie attended A&T State University before enlisting in the United States Army; serving two separate terms of active duty and earning several distinguished honors: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal W/60 Device, both times, he received honorable discharges.Never loosing sight of his goal to earn his degree, Willie settled down in Hope Mills, North Carolina and pursued his education, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree on May 8th, 1983 from Fayetteville State University. Later, he set his sights on studying for his Masters in Business Administration. After earning his B.S. Degree, Willie was employed for several years by his university alma mater...and enjoyed meeting and greeting students in the University Bookstore.Affectionately, family and friends knew him as Powell, Willie and Uncle Willie. Overwhelmingly, he enjoyed his title as “Granddaddy”. He was known to spoil his grandchildren and enjoyed attending services with the family at Willis Creek A.M.E. Zion Church. A quiet and generous man that never complained and whatever the occasion, he welcomed you with a warm and inviting smile.Willie leaves precious memories to his wife of over thirty years: Carrie; a daughter, Diana (Tiewone) Taylor; grandchildren; Donta and Dominique Powell and Heavenlea Taylor all of Fayetteville, NC; sisters, Catherine Lovely of Baltimore, MD and Blanche (Frank) Jenkins of Tarboro, NC; brothers, Walter Powell of Baltimore, MD; Dock Powell and James (Elizabeth) Powell both of Tarboro, NC; sisters-in-law, Iris Boyd of Norfolk, VA, Thelma Exum, Laverne Johnson and Joyce Johnson all of Rocky Mount, NC, Gloria Applewhite and Vivian Johnson both of Tarboro, NC; brothers-in-law, Ivery Jr. Johnson and Michael Johnson both of Tarboro, NC and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
