Mr. Zack William Landis

Zack William Landis, affectionately known to family as “ZW”, heard the call of the Lord beckoning him to come home to receive his reward on April 29, 2024. Zack was born on October 11, 1928, in Creedmoor, North Carolina to the Late Samuel Landis and Eva Bailey Landis Fields. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie McDonald Landis, his parents, one sister, Helen Davis, one brother, Clarence Fields, Jr., and daughter, Evelyn Landis. Zack graduated from E.E. Smith High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the military and served in the United States Army and United States Navy during the Korean War. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from National University. Zack was employed with the Veterans Affairs Fayetteville Coastal Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and retired after 29 years of service in the Psychiatry Unit. Zack was a faithful member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Parkton, North Carolina. He enjoyed serving in many capacities: Deacon Board, Financial Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk, and Treasurer of the Union Baptist Association. He was also a member of Eureka Masonic Lodge No. 3, Fayetteville, North Carolina. Zack was married to the Late Bessie McDonald Landis for 62 years. From their union, two children were born—Evelyn Landis (deceased) and Barry Anthony Landis. Zack was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. He enjoyed collecting rare items, volunteering with the Lumber Bridge Fire Department, and conserving the environment through recycling. Zack was blessed to spend the last years of his life living independently in his home—but he especially looked forward to his Sunday dinners prepared by Marie and his annual birthday dinners planned by Augusta, two special sisters-in-law who lovingly looked after Zack during his widower season. Zack leaves to cherish his memories: beloved son, Dr. Barry A. Landis, sisters-in-law, Nepsy Brown, Marie Bacote, Mattie W. McDonald, Augusta M. Scott, Gladys M. Johnson, Priscilla F. McDonald, Thelma C. McDonald, Thelma B. McDonald, Selisa McDonald, and, brothers-in-law, A G McDonald, Matthew J. McDonald, Reginald A. McDonald, Dr. James L. Glenn, Roy Johnson, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
